Yes, on paper. A 2027 Silverado 1500 30 ft travel trailer setup can work, but the margin is thin. GM lists the 2027 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab 5.7L V8 4WD at 1,940 lbs of payload and 13,500 lbs of towing with the Max Trailering Package. The tow rating is not what stops you. Payload is.
Below, we run two real 30 ft trailers, the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 261BHS and 265BHS, through the payload math. At our standard 15% tongue weight, both land in the Near zone. At 13%, the 261BHS is Within. Your door-jamb sticker decides the rest.
Quick Answer
With GM’s best-case 1,940 lb payload, two adults, 200 lbs of gear and a weight-distribution hitch, a 2027 Silverado 1500 5.7L crew cab 4WD keeps +185 to +337 lbs with the 261BHS and +140 to +298 lbs with the 265BHS at 13–15% tongue weight. That’s Near to Within for the 261BHS and Near for the 265BHS. At our 15% standard, both are Near. Options and higher trims cut payload below GM’s figure, so check your own sticker before you buy.
2027 Silverado 1500 Towing Capacity and Payload (Crew Cab 5.7L)
For 2027, the Silverado 1500 drops the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s. The lineup is the 2.7L TurboMax, the 3.0L Duramax diesel, a new 5.7L V8 (402 hp, 428 lb-ft) and a new 6.6L V8.
Here is what GM lists for the crew cab 5.7L:
| 2027 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab 5.7L V8 | 2WD | 4WD |
|---|---|---|
| Base payload (GM) | 1,920 lbs | 1,940 lbs |
| Max towing, with Max Trailering Package (NHT) | 13,600 lbs | 13,500 lbs |
| Max GVWR, 5’8″ bed | 6,900 lbs (7,200 with NHT) | 7,200 lbs (7,450 with NHT) |
GM lists the crew cab 5.7L towing figure only with the Max Trailering Package. It doesn’t list a crew cab 5.7L tow rating without the package, so we don’t give one here.
The bigger headline numbers you may see, like 13,700 lbs of towing or 2,170 lbs of payload, come from other cab and bed setups. They are not crew cab numbers.
Treat 1,940 lbs as GM’s best case for this truck. Higher trims, bigger wheels, a sunroof and other options add weight and cut payload. The only number that counts is the one on your truck. Here’s how to read your door-sticker payload. If you want the bigger picture on curb weight and GVWR, see how much a half-ton truck weighs.
What Does a 30 ft Travel Trailer Weigh?
A 30 ft travel trailer weight is usually quoted two ways: empty (dry, or unloaded vehicle weight) and fully loaded (GVWR). You tow the loaded one. Here is what Jayco lists for two popular 30 ft bunkhouse models:
| 2026 Jayco Jay Flight SLX | 261BHS | 265BHS |
|---|---|---|
| Length (overall) | 30′ 4″ | 30′ 10″ |
| Unloaded weight (UVW) | 5,790 lbs | 6,030 lbs |
| Cargo carrying capacity | 1,810 lbs | 1,870 lbs |
| GVWR (max loaded) | 7,600 lbs | 7,900 lbs |
| Dry hitch weight | 705 lbs | 675 lbs |
| Sleeps | Up to 10 | Up to 10 |
We use each trailer’s GVWR as its loaded weight. That is the worst case, and it matches the way families actually camp: water, propane, food, bikes, chairs and bedding for a full bunkhouse add up fast.
Watch the dry hitch number. It’s measured on an empty trailer. At 13% of 7,600 lbs, the 261BHS puts about 988 lbs on the hitch, not 705.
Tongue Weight: 10–15% of Loaded Weight
GM’s trailering guidance says a conventional trailer’s tongue weight should be 10–15% of the loaded trailer weight. That weight sits on the truck’s hitch, and it counts against payload. This is why tongue weight is the number that catches most half-ton owners.
Our standard check uses 15%. It’s the top of GM’s range, so it’s the conservative choice until you’ve weighed your actual tongue weight.
Payload Math: Silverado 1500 30 ft Travel Trailer Check (5.7L × Two Jaycos)
Our standard load:
- Two adults: 340 lbs
- Gear in the truck: 200 lbs
- Weight-distribution hitch head: 75 lbs
That’s 615 lbs. Taking it away from 1,940 lbs leaves 1,325 lbs for tongue weight.
| Tongue weight | 261BHS at 7,600 lbs | 265BHS at 7,900 lbs |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | 760 lbs → +565 (Within) | 790 lbs → +535 (Within) |
| 13% | 988 lbs → +337 (Within) | 1,027 lbs → +298 (Near) |
| 15% (our standard) | 1,140 lbs → +185 (Near) | 1,185 lbs → +140 (Near) |
Within means 300+ lbs left. Near means 0–299 lbs left. Over means below zero.
At 13–15% tongue weight, you have +140 to +337 lbs to spare. That’s not much. Every 100 lbs less on your sticker cuts the margin by 100 lbs:
- 265BHS: a sticker more than 140 lbs below GM’s 1,940 (1,799 lbs or less) goes Over at 15% tongue.
- 261BHS: a sticker more than 185 lbs below GM’s figure (1,754 lbs or less) goes Over at 15% tongue.
- Add two kids (120 lbs total): the 261BHS drops to +65 and the 265BHS to +20. Both are still Near, but there is almost no room left for a cooler or a generator in the bed.
And the 13,500 lb tow rating? Both trailers are far below it. That’s the point: on a half-ton, payload runs out long before the tow rating does.
Not sure if your truck is within safe limits? Towing Limit Pro helps you verify your real setup using your actual payload sticker, passengers, cargo, and trailer numbers.
- Remaining payload (what you actually have left)
- Realistic tongue weight estimate (loaded, not brochure)
- GVWR margin + a clear safety buffer
- Risk-zone warning if your setup is pushing limits
Tip: Use your truck’s yellow door sticker payload for the most accurate result.

What GM Hasn’t Published Yet (GCWR) and How to Check Your Truck
GM has not published 2027 GCWR yet. Check the Trailering Information label on the driver door jamb. GCWR is the max weight of the truck, trailer, people and cargo all together. Until GM posts its 2027 trailering guide, we won’t guess at it.
Before you sign for a 30 ft trailer:
- Read the payload on your driver door-jamb sticker. That’s your starting number, not 1,940.
- Check the Trailering Information label for your truck’s ratings.
- Use a weight-distribution hitch with sway control. It spreads the load and helps control sway, but it does not add payload.
- Weigh the loaded truck and trailer on a certified scale before a long trip.
How the Silverado Compares
The 2027 5.7L crew cab’s 1,940 lb best case puts it in the same tight spot as most half-ton crew cabs with a family-size bunkhouse. Verdict: Can a 2027 Silverado 1500 Tow a 30 ft Travel Trailer?
Yes, with a catch. On GM’s best-case 1,940 lbs of payload, a 2027 Silverado 1500 5.7L crew cab 4WD stays out of Over with either Jay Flight SLX. At 13–15% tongue weight, the 261BHS keeps +185 to +337 lbs (Near to Within) and the 265BHS keeps +140 to +298 lbs (Near). At our 15% standard, both are Near. Add kids, a heavier trim or more gear, and you can cross into Over fast.
If your sticker reads well under 1,940, look at a lighter 30 ft trailer or pack light. For more matchups like this one, browse Can My Truck Tow It?
FAQs
Is the 2027 Silverado 1500 5.3L still available?
No. For 2027, GM lists the 2.7L TurboMax, 3.0L Duramax, 5.7L V8 and 6.6L V8. The 5.3L and 6.2L are gone.
Do I need the Max Trailering Package for a 30 ft trailer?
GM lists the crew cab 5.7L’s 13,500 lb (4WD) tow rating with the Max Trailering Package, and it doesn’t list a crew cab 5.7L rating without it. Both Jaycos weigh far less than that. For these trailers, payload is the limit, not the tow rating. The package also raises max GVWR on the 4WD 5’8″ bed from 7,200 to 7,450 lbs.
Can a Chevy 1500 pull a 30 ft camper with a family on board?
It can, but the margin is small. With two adults, two kids, 200 lbs of gear and 15% tongue weight, our math leaves about +65 lbs with the 261BHS and +20 lbs with the 265BHS on GM’s best-case payload. A lower sticker number can push that to Over.
How much tongue weight does a 30 ft travel trailer have?
Plan on 10–15% of the loaded weight. For the 7,600 lb 261BHS, that’s 760 to 1,140 lbs. For the 7,900 lb 265BHS, it’s 790 to 1,185 lbs. The dry hitch weight on the spec sheet is much lower because it’s measured empty.
What’s the 2027 Silverado 1500 GCWR?
GM has not published 2027 GCWR yet. Check the Trailering Information label on your driver door jamb.
Most half-ton trucks hit their payload limit long before they hit their tow rating limit — and most owners don’t realize it until they’re already committed. Verify your exact setup and know where you stand.
- Remaining payload (your real limit)
- Realistic tongue weight (loaded)
- GVWR margin + safety buffer
- Clear risk-zone indicator
Best results: use your yellow door-sticker payload number and your loaded trailer estimate (not dry weight).
