Quick Answer

Can a 2026 Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI tow a Grand Design Imagine? Yes on tow rating, and no on payload for a typical loaded trip. A 2026 Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI crew cab 4×4 is rated to tow 7,640–9,590 lbs depending on axle ratio, with about 1,630 lbs of published payload. Both Grand Design Imagine floorplans (2600RB and 2500RL) sit under that tow rating on paper. Once you add two adults, gear, a weight-distribution hitch and a realistic loaded tongue weight, the same truck lands −65 lbs (Over) with the 2600RB and −77 lbs (Over) with the 2500RL.

The tow sticker says “go.” The payload sticker says “stop.” Check your door jamb before you put a deposit on either Imagine.

2026 Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI: Tow Rating vs Payload

Ram’s brochure can show a 5.7L HEMI towing more than 11,000 lbs. That peak figure is a light 4×2 build with the 3.92 axle. A crew cab family truck is different:

Crew cab 4×2 · 3.92 axle1,650 lbs11,320 lbs—

Source: 2026 Ram 1500 trailer towing charts (crew cab Tradesman-class figures). Axle ratio changes tow rating; payload for the 4×4 crew stays ~1,630 lbs.

Axle ratio matters for the hitch rating. It does not buy you more payload. Every pound of people, cooler, hitch head and trailer tongue still comes out of that ~1,630 lb budget. That is why payload, not tow rating, determines whether you’re safe to tow.

Find Your Ram’s Real Payload

The 1,630 lb figure is a published best case for a crew cab 4×4 HEMI. A Laramie or Limited with a sunroof, running boards, bigger wheels and a power tonneau will usually show less. Your exact number is on the yellow Tire and Loading Information sticker on the driver’s door jamb: “The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXXX lbs.”

If your sticker is 1,480 or 1,520, rerun the math below with that number — not the brochure. For a walkthrough, see how to read your truck’s door sticker.

The Trailers: Imagine 2600RB vs 2500RL

Grand Design’s Imagine line is popular with half-ton shoppers: one slide, ~30 ft, rear bath (2600RB) or rear lounge (2500RL). Brochure dry weights look manageable. Loaded weights are not the same thing.

UVW and dry hitch from Grand Design OEM spec sheets (rev 12.17.24). GVWR from RVUSA and 2026 dealer listings. Dry hitch on dealer sites often reads ~65 lbs higher than the OEM PDF — another reason not to trust brochure tongue alone.

Dry weight leaves out fresh water (~8.3 lbs per gallon), propane, food, bedding, outdoor gear and whatever ends up in the pass-through. A fair camping load for either coach lands near 7,200–7,300 lbs before you fill every cabinet to the cargo ceiling.

Tongue Weight: 10–15% of Loaded Weight

Industry guidance puts conventional travel-trailer tongue weight at roughly 10–15% of the trailer’s loaded weight — not the UVW on the window sticker. We use 15%, the top of that band, because front storage, full fresh tanks and a loaded pass-through often push tongue forward. That matches how we run other Can It Tow? matchups.

At 15%:

  • Imagine 2600RB at ~7,200 lbs loaded → ~1,080 lbs on the hitch
  • Imagine 2500RL at ~7,280 lbs loaded → ~1,092 lbs on the hitch

Those numbers alone eat most of a 1,630 lb payload budget — before anyone sits in the seats. For why tongue weight hits half-tons so hard, see why tongue weight destroys half-ton towing capacity.

Payload Math: 2026 Ram 1500 HEMI × Both Imagines

Worked example: 2026 Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI crew cab 5′7″ 4×4, published payload 1,630 lbs.

  • Driver + passenger: 340 lbs
  • Gear in the cab and bed (cooler, tools, chairs, firewood): 200 lbs
  • Weight-distribution hitch head and bars: 75 lbs (example; check your hitch)
  • Tongue at 15% of estimated loaded trailer weight (below)

VerdictOverOver

Loaded estimates = OEM UVW + full fresh (~375) + LP gas (~40) + ~300 lbs camping gear. Your scale weights will differ; empty fresh water helps, but not enough to create a comfortable margin on this truck.

How we label the result: Within means 300+ lbs of payload left, Near means 0–299 lbs left, and Over means the truck is past its payload rating before it leaves the driveway.

Remaining payload: −65 lbs on the 2600RB. −77 lbs on the 2500RL. That is not a rounding error. It is the truck already over its published payload with a normal couple’s camping load.

If you’re wondering where your truck would land in this calculation, don’t guess.

The Dry-Hitch Trap

If you only subtract the OEM dry hitch (674 / 678) and ignore how tongue grows when the trailer is loaded, the same truck looks fine:

Using dry hitch only2600RB (674)2500RL (678)
People + gear + WD hitch−615−615
Dry hitch−674−678
Remaining+341 (Within)+337 (Within)

That “Within” result is the trap dealers and window stickers accidentally sell. Dry hitch is measured on an empty trailer. You do not tow an empty trailer. A five-figure tow rating does not mean you can tow five figures once tongue weight is real.

What Would It Take to Stay Legal?

With 1,630 − 615 = 1,015 lbs left for tongue, a 15% tongue budget tops out around 6,767 lbs loaded before you hit zero margin. Both Imagines’ UVWs already sit near that line. Add water and gear and you are past it.

Practical options if you love this floorplan family:

  • Travel empty on fresh water and fill at the campground — helps, but on this HEMI crew cab it still lands Near/Over, not Within.
  • Weigh the combination (CAT scale: truck alone, then truck + trailer) and compare to your door sticker, not the brochure.
  • Look at lighter Imagines or other sub-6,500 lb loaded coaches — see best travel trailers for half-ton trucks.
  • Consider a higher-payload powertrain (for example the 3.0L Hurricane standard-output crew cab publishes ~1,840 lbs) or a ¾-ton if this floorplan is non-negotiable.

We already ran a related matchup on the Ford side: Can a 2023 F-150 XLT tow an Imagine 2600RB? Same trailer class, same payload physics.

Verdict: Can a 2026 Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI Tow an Imagine 2600RB or 2500RL?

Tow rating: yes. Payload: over on both floorplans with a realistic loaded tongue at 15%.

  • Imagine 2600RB: about −65 lbs remaining → Over
  • Imagine 2500RL: about −77 lbs remaining → Over (slightly heavier UVW)

Neither trailer is “unsafe because the tow rating is too low.” Both are a poor match for this truck because tongue weight plus people and gear exhaust a 1,630 lb payload. The 2500RL is not meaningfully worse than the 2600RB — they fail the same test for the same reason.

FAQs

Can a Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI tow a Grand Design Imagine?

On tow rating, many HEMI crew cabs can. On payload, a 2026 crew cab 4×4 with ~1,630 lbs published payload goes Over with either the Imagine 2600RB or 2500RL once the trailer is loaded and tongue weight is estimated at 15%. Always use your door-sticker payload.

What is the towing capacity of a 2026 Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI?

It depends on cab, drive and axle. Crew cab 4×4 figures land around 7,640 lbs (3.55) or 9,590 lbs (3.92). A 4×2 with the 3.92 axle can show up to about 11,320 lbs. Payload for the 4×4 crew stays near 1,630 lbs either way.

How much does a Grand Design Imagine 2600RB weigh?

Grand Design’s OEM sheet lists UVW at 6,487 lbs and dry hitch at 674 lbs. GVWR on 2026 listings is 7,850 lbs. Expect roughly 7,200 lbs once water, propane and camping gear are aboard — and tongue weight well above the dry hitch number.

Is the Imagine 2500RL lighter than the 2600RB?

No. The OEM UVW is slightly higher on the 2500RL (6,569 vs 6,487). In our loaded math both go Over on a 1,630 lb HEMI crew cab; the 2500RL is a few dozen pounds worse, not a different class of trailer.

Does a weight-distribution hitch increase payload?

No. A WD hitch redistributes load for stability and often restores some steering feel. It does not add payload capacity. The hitch hardware itself usually costs payload (we used 75 lbs as an example). Details: Does a weight distribution hitch increase payload?
