Understanding Towing Terms
Truck
Curb Weight
The weight of the truck by itself, without passengers or cargo.
Front GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating)
The maximum weight the front axle of your truck can safely support.
Rear GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating)
The maximum weight the rear axle of your truck can safely support.
Tow Rating
The maximum trailer weight your truck can safely tow, according to the manufacturer.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)
The maximum total weight your truck can safely carry, including passengers and cargo.
GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating)
The maximum total weight of the truck plus the trailer together.
Payload (sticker)
The maximum cargo capacity shown on the manufacturer’s sticker (usually found inside the driver’s door).
Estimated Payload
Passenger Weight
The total weight of all passengers in the truck.
Truck bed load
The total weight of cargo placed in the truck’s bed.
Hitch Hardware weight
The weight of the hitch equipment (ball mount, bars, etc.).
Tongue Weight Percentage
The proportion of trailer weight carried by the hitch (usually 10–15% of total trailer weight).
RV
UVW (Dry Weight)
The empty trailer weight, without cargo or water.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)
