Quick Answer

The 2026 Chevy Silverado 1500 out-tows the 2026 Ram 1500 on paper (13,300 vs 11,610 lbs max) and, more importantly, it out-carries it in the crew cab 4×4 builds families actually buy. With the same 7,000 lb loaded travel trailer, a Silverado 5.3L crew cab keeps +325 lbs of payload (Within). A Ram 1500 with the standard 3.0L Hurricane keeps +175 lbs (Near), and the returning 5.7L HEMI goes −35 lbs over.

The Ram is still a capable tow vehicle — it just has less payload to spend in crew cab form, so it suits trailers closer to 6,000–6,500 lbs loaded. Always check your own door sticker.

Neither maximum describes a crew cab 4×4 with a short bed. So let’s line those up. (“Half-ton” is a class name, not the payload — here’s how much a half-ton truck really weighs.)

Two things jump out. First, every Silverado engine in this cab carries more published payload than every Ram engine. Second, the high-output Hurricane — the most powerful Ram 1500 engine — has the least payload, because the trims it comes in (Limited, Tungsten, RHO) are heavy. More horsepower does not mean more towing room. If you’re shopping a HEMI specifically, read what dealers don’t explain about Ram 1500 HEMI towing.

The Trailer and the Load

We use the same 7,000 lb loaded travel trailer for every TLP matchup: a mid-size family bunkhouse with water, propane, food and gear aboard. Dry weight on the sticker is usually lower and is the wrong number to plan with.

Ram calculates its towing chart at 10% tongue weight, and Chevrolet tells owners to expect 10% to 15%. We use 15% because loaded bunkhouses with front storage often sit near the top of that range. That puts 1,050 lbs on the hitch, which comes straight out of payload.

  • Driver + passenger: 340 lbs
  • Gear in the cab and bed (cooler, tools, chairs, firewood): 200 lbs
  • Weight-distribution hitch head and bars: 75 lbs (an example; check your hitch’s spec)
  • Tongue weight at 15% of a 7,000 lb loaded trailer: 1,050 lbs

How we label the result: Within means 300+ lbs of payload left, Near means 0–299 lbs left, and Over means the truck is past its payload rating before it leaves the driveway. 300 lbs sounds like a lot until you add one more passenger, a full fresh-water tank that shifts tongue weight forward, or a bed full of firewood.

The Silverado 5.3L with the Max Trailering Package does even better: +425 lbs. On the Ram side, the Pentastar lands at +125 lbs (Near), but its 7,340 lb tow rating leaves almost no room above a 7,000 lb trailer. The Hurricane HO comes in at −215 lbs (Over).

The Hidden Limit on the Ram: Receiver and Rating Fine Print

Ram’s chart has two footnotes worth knowing:

  • Trailer ratings include 300 lbs of passengers. Your ratings are already assuming two adults are in the truck. Bring the kids and you are past the assumption.
  • The Class IV receiver is limited to 1,100 lbs of tongue weight. At 15% tongue weight, that caps the trailer at about 7,330 lbs no matter what the tow rating says. At 10%, it would be 11,000 lbs. A heavy-tongue trailer runs into this before it reaches the bigger tow ratings.

Both brands recommend a weight-distribution hitch on heavy trailers (Ram says over 5,000 lbs). It levels the truck and improves steering, but it does not add payload. Here is why a weight-distribution hitch doesn’t increase payload.

How Heavy a Trailer Can Each Truck Handle?

Keep the same people, gear and hitch (615 lbs) and solve for the heaviest loaded trailer each truck can carry at 15% tongue weight before payload hits zero:

2026 crew cab 4×4Payload ceiling (loaded trailer)Tow rating
Silverado 5.3L w/ Max Traileringabout 9,800 lbs11,000 lbs
Silverado 5.3Labout 9,150 lbs9,300 lbs
Ram 3.0L Hurricane SO (3.92)about 8,150 lbs11,200 lbs
Ram 5.7L HEMI (3.92)about 6,750 lbs9,590 lbs

Zero margin is a ceiling, not a target.

The Silverado 5.3L’s payload ceiling actually sits close to its 9,300 lb base tow rating, which is unusual for a half-ton. The Ram’s tow ratings sit 3,000+ lbs above what its payload supports at 15% tongue weight. If you’re eyeing a long bunkhouse, run it first — our look at whether a Ram 1500 can tow a 32-foot travel trailer shows how fast that gap closes.

Verdict: Ram 1500 or Silverado 1500 for Towing?

Silverado 1500 5.3L: Within (+325 lbs). For a 7,000 lb family trailer, the 2026 Silverado crew cab is the safer bet. The Max Trailering Package adds payload and tow rating.

Ram 1500 3.0L Hurricane SO: Near (+175 lbs). It works on a best-case sticker, with little room for extra passengers or options. It is a better match for 6,000–6,500 lb loaded trailers.

Ram 1500 5.7L HEMI and Hurricane HO: Over. Not for a 7,000 lb loaded trailer with two adults and gear. Our Silverado 1500 trailer-size guide covers what fits on the Chevy side.

Shopping new? The math above is for 2026 trucks. Chevrolet’s all-new 2027 Silverado 1500 is rated up to 13,700 lbs of towing and up to 2,340 lbs of payload, and its crew cab 4WD payloads are now listed at up to 2,040 lbs (2.7L TurboMax), 1,940 lbs (new 5.7L V8), 1,810 lbs (Duramax) and 1,510 lbs (new 6.6L V8). With our 7,000 lb test load, the 5.7L crew cab keeps about +275 lbs (Near). The 2027 Ram 1500 crew cab 4×4 with the standard Hurricane is still listed at 1,840 lbs (+175, Near), and Ram’s 2027 maximums are 11,530 lbs towing and 2,340 lbs payload.

Know Before You Tow
Built for real numbers

Most half-ton trucks hit their payload limit long before they hit their tow rating limit — and most owners don’t realize it until they’re already committed. Verify your exact setup and know where you stand.

FAQs

Which tows more, Ram 1500 or Silverado 1500?

For 2026, the Silverado 1500 has the higher maximum tow rating (13,300 vs 11,610 lbs). In crew cab 4x4 short-bed form, the Silverado also has more published payload with every engine, which matters more for travel trailers.

Is the Ram 1500 HEMI good for towing a travel trailer?

The 2026 HEMI crew cab 4x4 is rated 9,590 lbs with the 3.92 axle, but its published payload is 1,630 lbs. With two adults, gear and a 7,000 lb loaded trailer at 15% tongue weight, it is about 35 lbs over. A lighter trailer fits better.

Does the Ram 1500 tow rating include passengers?

Yes. Ram’s 2026 chart says trailer weight capacities include 300 lbs of passengers. More people, or gear in the bed, reduces what is left.

Should I use 10% or 15% for tongue weight?

Use your trailer’s actual tongue weight if you can weigh it. If not, 15% is the safer planning number for a loaded travel trailer; 10% often underestimates.
